Black vinyl-coated mesh looks far better than the old silver kind, and it costs only a little more. On a long rural run, galvanized is hard to beat on price.

What makes chain link last here

What separates good chain link from bad is the install. We're fussy about three things:

  1. Posts. Line, corner and gate posts go below the frost line in concrete. Around Peterborough that's about 4 ft, deeper in exposed or wet ground. Shallow posts heave, and once a post moves the mesh goes slack.
  2. Tension. The mesh gets pulled tight between corners so it doesn't sag or belly out.
  3. Gates. Hung on posts heavy enough that the gate still closes properly years later.

Where an auger hits rock, as it often does around Lakefield and Havelock, we pin or core-set the post instead of hoping shallow dirt will hold.

Chain link for dogs

For most dogs, chain link is the everyday choice. It's affordable, it's see-through, and most dogs are happy with a view.

  • Diggers: we bury the bottom edge or add a ground apron.
  • Climbers and jumpers: we go taller (5 to 6 ft for jumpers and large breeds) and keep the top rails tight.
  • Chewers: latches and hardware a dog can't chew through.

Sizing a dog run? As a rule of thumb, aim for at least 10 ft of running length for a medium dog, more for large breeds. See dog kennels and runs and chain link vs wood for dogs.

Chain link around a pool

Tight-mesh chain link can enclose a pool when it's built at the proper height with compliant self-closing, self-latching gates. Iron and vinyl are more popular for looks, but chain link passes when it's built to code. More on pool fences.

Commercial and job sites

We also build chain link for commercial perimeters, with barbed wire if the site needs it, plus walk gates and wide drive gates. See commercial fencing.

Matching an existing fence

Most of the time we can match chain link you already have. Send us a photo with the height and gauge, and we'll source matching mesh, posts and hardware for an extension or a repair. For damaged runs, see fence repair.

What moves the cost

  • Galvanized vs vinyl-coated mesh
  • Height
  • Number and width of gates
  • Rock, slope and tight access
  • Tearing out and hauling away an old fence

A long, flat run with one gate is the cheapest per foot. Short runs with several gates cost more. Our fence cost guide ranks every material by cost.

Is chain link right for your yard?

Chain link is a good fit if you want:

  • A dog run or a big yard fenced
  • The lowest cost per foot
  • A fence for a commercial lot or job site

Think twice if:

  • You want privacy from the neighbours. Look at wood or vinyl.
  • Curb appeal is the priority. Look at ornamental iron or vinyl.

Questions we get about installs.

Yes. Where an auger hits Shield rock, common around Lakefield and Havelock, we pin or core-set the post with proper anchoring rather than shallow dirt. It costs a bit more per hole, but the fence doesn't move.

Yes. The panels can rack to follow the grade, or be stepped for a formal look. We plan the method for each run so pets stay in and the top line still looks straight.

Most residential privacy runs take 1 to 3 days once the materials are on site. A pool fence is usually a 1 to 2 day install. Longer farm or riverfront jobs are scheduled in phases.
