A commercial fence has one job: keep the right people and vehicles in, and everyone else out, every day of the year. For most lots and yards around Peterborough, that means chain link, built tight and set deep. Where the frontage needs to look good as well as hold the line, ornamental steel or aluminum does both.

Chain link: the workhorse

Chain link costs the least per foot, needs almost no upkeep, and stands up to job sites. That makes it the best value on long commercial runs.

Black vinyl-coated mesh looks far better than the old silver kind and costs only a little more. Galvanized is hard to beat on price for a long back-lot run.

Security options

  • Barbed wire along the top, if the site needs it
  • Walk gates for staff and foot traffic
  • Wide drive gates for trucks and equipment
  • Line, corner and gate posts in concrete so the perimeter doesn't move

Ornamental fencing for frontages

Ornamental iron secures a commercial lot and you can still see straight through it, which keeps a storefront or office visible from the road. Modern ornamental fencing is welded steel or aluminum with a wrought-iron look, powder-coated so it stands up to road salt, snow and sun. It costs more up front than chain link, and gates are priced on top. More on ornamental iron fences.

Built for freeze-thaw

What separates good chain link from bad is the install: mesh pulled tight, line posts set in concrete, and gates that still close properly years later. That's the part we're fussy about.

Around Peterborough, clay soil and deep frost are normal. Posts that aren't below the frost line (about 4 ft here) heave, and a heaved post lets the mesh go slack or throws a drive gate out of line. We auger below frost and put concrete around every structural post. Where an auger hits rock, as it often does around Lakefield and Havelock, we pin or core-set the post instead.

On open sites, wind is what wears a fence out. We set corner and gate posts deeper and brace long runs harder, the same way we build field lines around Norwood.

Extensions and repairs

Most of the time we can match chain link you already have. Send us a photo with the height and gauge, and we'll source matching mesh, posts and hardware for an extension or a repair. For damaged sections, leaning posts or a gate that drags, see fence repair and gates.

What moves the cost

  • Galvanized or vinyl-coated mesh, or ornamental panels
  • Height, and whether barbed wire goes on top
  • Number and width of gates (a driveway gate adds thousands)
  • Rock, slope and tight access
  • Tearing out and hauling away an old fence

A long, straight run with one gate is the cheapest per foot. Short runs with several gates cost more. Our fence cost guide ranks every material by cost.

Is chain link right for your site?

Commercial chain link is a good fit if you need:

  • A lot, yard or job site fenced
  • The lowest cost per foot on a long run
  • Security, with barbed wire if needed

Think twice if:

  • You need privacy or screening. Look at wood or vinyl.
  • Curb appeal is the priority on a frontage. Look at ornamental iron.

Questions we get about installs.

Yes. Where an auger hits Shield rock, common around Lakefield and Havelock, we pin or core-set the post with proper anchoring rather than shallow dirt. It costs a bit more per hole, but the fence doesn't move.

Yes. The panels can rack to follow the grade, or be stepped for a formal look. We plan the method for each run so pets stay in and the top line still looks straight.

Most residential privacy runs take 1 to 3 days once the materials are on site. A pool fence is usually a 1 to 2 day install. Longer farm or riverfront jobs are scheduled in phases.
