Vinyl gives you the clean look of a freshly painted fence, and you never touch a brush. It won't rot, warp, splinter or fade to grey, and a garden hose keeps it looking new.

The trade is simple. It costs more up front and close to nothing after. If you're staying put, that usually beats wood, which needs washing or staining every 2 to 4 years.

Vinyl in an Ontario winter

The most common question we get about vinyl is whether it cracks in the cold. Good vinyl is made for cold and flexes rather than shatters. The bigger winter risk is a cheap install, where posts heave because they weren't set below the frost line. That's an installation problem, not a vinyl problem.

So we treat a vinyl fence the same way we treat every fence:

  • Posts augered below frost, about 4 ft around Peterborough and deeper in exposed or wet ground
  • Concrete around structural posts
  • Belled, crowned footings on low, wet ground like Lindsay's, so meltwater runs off instead of jacking posts up
  • Pinned or core-set posts where we hit Shield rock near Lakefield

Why routed rails matter

We install vinyl from reputable manufacturers, with the panels routed into the rails instead of screwed on. Routed rails keep the panels locked together through wind and frost.

Every vinyl fence we install is backed by the manufacturer warranty.

Styles we install

Privacy

Solid panels for full backyard privacy, up to the height your town's by-law allows in rear and side yards. That limit varies by town, so we check it for your address.

Semi-private

Spaced boards that screen the yard without a solid wall.

Picket

A classic front yard boundary, kept to your town's front-yard height limit, which is lower than the backyard one.

Post-and-rail

A simple, open rail boundary when you want to mark a line, not hide the yard.

Caps and hardware are colour-matched to the fence.

Vinyl vs wood at a glance

Vinyl Wood
Cost per foot Higher up front Lower up front
Upkeep A rinse with the hose Wash or stain every 2 to 4 years
Rot, warp, splinter Won't Needs regular care to hold up
Custom shapes Fewer options Almost anything

If you plan to stay five years or more, vinyl is usually worth the extra cost. If you're watching the budget or want the look of natural wood, a well-built wood fence is the better call. The full comparison is in wood vs vinyl for Ontario winters.

Lakefront and windy lots

Vinyl and powder-coated metal handle lake wind and spray with almost no upkeep, which makes vinyl a good match for Cobourg and waterfront lots around Lakefield. Near the water we use stainless or hot-dipped hardware and avoid untreated hardware entirely.

Vinyl around pools

Vinyl privacy fencing can enclose a pool when it's built to the spacing and height rules, with self-closing, self-latching gates. See pool fences and our guide to pool fence bylaws in Peterborough and Cobourg.

Is vinyl right for your yard?

Vinyl is a good fit if you want:

  • Privacy with zero upkeep
  • A fence for a windy or lakefront site
  • Something you won't think about for years

Think twice if:

  • The budget is tight. Chain link and pressure-treated wood cost less.
  • You want the look of natural wood.

Questions we get about installs.

Yes. Where an auger hits Shield rock, common around Lakefield and Havelock, we pin or core-set the post with proper anchoring rather than shallow dirt. It costs a bit more per hole, but the fence doesn't move.

Yes. The panels can rack to follow the grade, or be stepped for a formal look. We plan the method for each run so pets stay in and the top line still looks straight.

Most residential privacy runs take 1 to 3 days once the materials are on site. A pool fence is usually a 1 to 2 day install. Longer farm or riverfront jobs are scheduled in phases.
