Fence Installation in Havelock, ON

Fence installation and repair in Havelock, Ontario. Dog runs, wood privacy fences, chain link and farm perimeters, with posts set properly in rock.

Havelock-Belmont-Methuen, Peterborough County

Havelock and Belmont-Methuen mix village homes with acreage, and bedrock sits close to the surface. You get the same deep posts and level rails as anywhere else we build, with the footings adapted for rock. Durable Fence has been building fences around Peterborough since 2003, and we make the drive out to Havelock for big jobs and small ones.

What the ground does here

Out here, the shovel finds rock fast. Bedrock close to the surface means we pin or concrete posts into it rather than trusting a few inches of dirt. A post that only sits in shallow soil will move the first time frost gets under it, and frost reaches about 4 feet down in this part of Ontario.

Where there is enough soil, we auger below the frost line and set every structural post in concrete, the same as in town. The method changes from hole to hole on some lots, and that's fine. What matters is that nothing moves after the first winter.

The fences we build most in Havelock

The work out here is mostly dog runs, privacy fences and farm perimeters.

  • Dog kennels and runs: portable kennels that move with the seasons, or permanent runs set in concrete. As a rule of thumb, plan on at least 10 feet of running length for a medium dog, and more for large breeds.
  • Wood privacy fences: cedar or pressure-treated, with the posts set into rock where an auger can't go.
  • Chain link: the lowest cost per foot, and a good fit for acreage. We bury the bottom edge for dogs that dig.
  • Fence repair: gate fixes, heaved posts and storm-damaged sections.
  • Gates sized for walk-throughs or equipment.

For dogs on acreage, chain link with a buried edge or welded panels is usually the answer, sized for the dog and fitted with latches it can't chew. Our guide to chain link vs wood for dogs goes through the options.

Access and staging

Long driveways and tight access don't slow us down. We stage materials so the yard stays intact, and if a truck can get there, we build there. Dog runs, gate fixes and single privacy runs are all worth the trip.

Township rules and line fences

Residential fence heights follow township rules, so we check them for your address. The township's zoning by-law (2025-046) says every pool, hot tubs included, must be fenced with a self-closing gate, and pools need a permit.

For rural line fences, talk to your neighbour before anything goes in and know where the property line is. Ontario's Line Fences Act gives a process for settling disputes over shared boundary fences in municipalities that use it, and our fence height guide covers the basics.

Fence questions in Havelock.

Yes. Dog runs, gate fixes and single privacy runs are all worth the trip. If a truck can get there, we build there.

Chain link with a buried edge, or welded panels, sized for the dog and fitted with latches it can't chew. A portable kennel works if you need to move it with the seasons.

Yes, Havelock rock is familiar ground. We pin or concrete the posts into rock instead of hoping shallow dirt will hold.

Yes. Where an auger hits Shield rock, common around Lakefield and Havelock, we pin or core-set the post with proper anchoring rather than shallow dirt. It costs a bit more per hole, but the fence doesn't move.

Yes. The panels can rack to follow the grade, or be stepped for a formal look. We plan the method for each run so pets stay in and the top line still looks straight.

Most residential privacy runs take 1 to 3 days once the materials are on site. A pool fence is usually a 1 to 2 day install. Longer farm or riverfront jobs are scheduled in phases.

Each town sets its own by-law. It's at least 1.2 m (4 ft) in Peterborough, Kawartha Lakes, Selwyn and Asphodel-Norwood, and 1.83 m (6 ft) in Cobourg, with self-closing, self-latching gates. We confirm the current by-law for your address before quoting.

It varies by town. Nearby, Cobourg allows up to 1.8 m near rear and side lot lines, Selwyn 1.8 m, Asphodel-Norwood 2.0 m and Kawartha Lakes up to 2 m in most residential areas. For a Peterborough address, we confirm the city's current rules at the free estimate.

No, the City of Peterborough doesn't require a permit for a fence, except a pool or hot tub enclosure, which does need one. Height and sight-line rules still apply, so we check the current by-law for your address at the estimate.

Often. Heaved posts can be reset below the frost line in fresh concrete. If several moved at once, the original install was probably too shallow, which is worth fixing once and properly.

Good vinyl is made for cold and flexes rather than shatters. The bigger winter risk is a cheap install, where posts heave because they weren't set below the frost line. That's an installation problem, not a vinyl problem.

Below the frost line, which is typically around 4 ft in the Peterborough area, and deeper in exposed or wet ground. It's the biggest difference between a fence that lasts 20 years and one that leans after two winters.
