Very little. No staining or painting.

Ornamental iron looks permanent because it is. It secures a front yard, garden, pool or commercial lot, and you can still see straight through it. That makes it the right fence when you want a boundary without giving up a view.

Wrought iron vs ornamental steel and aluminum

True wrought iron is forged by hand and very expensive. Modern ornamental fencing is welded steel or aluminum made to look like it. It handles rust better than the old material at a fraction of the price.

Built for salt, snow and sun

The powder coat is what keeps ornamental fencing looking good through road salt, snow and summer sun. Near the water, in places like Cobourg, we use powder-coated finishes with stainless or hot-dipped hardware, and avoid untreated hardware anywhere near the lake.

Underneath, it's the same as every fence we build. Posts go below the frost line, about 4 ft around Peterborough and deeper in exposed or wet ground, so the top line stays straight through freeze-thaw.

Slopes and lakeside lots

Slopes don't scare us. Lots along the Otonabee River and Katchewanooka Lake around Lakefield are rarely flat, with rock shelves and shoreline setbacks. We handle that two ways:

  • Racked panels follow the grade, so there are no dog-sized gaps underneath.
  • Stepped panels keep each section level for a formal look.

Where an auger can't go, we core or pin posts into the rock. Terraced and lakeside yards end up looking deliberate instead of fought over. On waterfront properties we keep view corridors open with iron where you want the lake visible.

Ornamental iron for pools

Ornamental iron is the classic pool fence. You keep the view, it resists climbing, and it's code-friendly. We build designs that meet pool-code rules, with self-closing, self-latching gates. Pool enclosures need to be at least 1.2 m (4 ft) in Peterborough, Kawartha Lakes, Selwyn and Asphodel-Norwood, and 1.83 m (6 ft) in Cobourg, and we confirm the current by-law for your address before we quote. See pool fences and our pool fence bylaw guide.

Gates

Custom driveway and garden gates are a big part of iron work. Gates are priced on top of the per-foot run. A walk gate adds hundreds and a driveway gate adds thousands. More on gates.

What moves the cost

  • Steel or aluminum
  • Height and panel style
  • Number and type of gates
  • Slope, rock and retaining-wall transitions
  • Tight access

Our fence cost guide compares iron with every other material.

Is ornamental iron right for your yard?

Ornamental iron is a good fit if you want:

  • A pool fence with the code requirements built in
  • A front yard or garden boundary with curb appeal
  • To keep a lake view open

Think twice if:

  • You want privacy. Look at wood or vinyl.
  • The budget is tight. Chain link costs far less per foot.

Questions we get about installs.

Yes. Where an auger hits Shield rock, common around Lakefield and Havelock, we pin or core-set the post with proper anchoring rather than shallow dirt. It costs a bit more per hole, but the fence doesn't move.

Yes. The panels can rack to follow the grade, or be stepped for a formal look. We plan the method for each run so pets stay in and the top line still looks straight.

Most residential privacy runs take 1 to 3 days once the materials are on site. A pool fence is usually a 1 to 2 day install. Longer farm or riverfront jobs are scheduled in phases.
