Fence Installation in Norwood, ON

Residential and farm fence installation in Norwood and Asphodel-Norwood Township, Ontario. Wood privacy, chain link, vinyl and fence repair.

Asphodel-Norwood, Peterborough County

Village lot or working farm, Norwood jobs come in two sizes: a backyard privacy run, or a field line that goes on for a while. We build both. Durable Fence has been building fences around Peterborough since 2003, and Norwood is a short drive east along Highway 7.

What the ground and weather do here

Norwood splits between village lots and working farms through Asphodel-Norwood Township. Wind across open fields is what wears fences out, so we set corner and gate posts deeper and brace long runs harder. That's how a gate still closes in January.

Frost reaches about 4 feet down in this area. A post set above that gets lifted a little every winter by freeze-thaw, and on a long farm line a few heaved posts are enough to slacken the whole run. Out of town, bracing and drainage matter more than looks.

The fences we build most in Norwood

In the village we build the same privacy, vinyl and chain link runs as in Peterborough. Out of town we run long, straight paddock and boundary lines.

  • Chain link: the lowest cost per foot, with black vinyl-coated a little more than galvanized. It suits dog runs and big yards.
  • Wood privacy fences: cedar or pressure-treated for village backyards. Pressure-treated costs less than cedar.
  • Fence repair: storm damage is about half of our rural call-outs. We reset heaved posts below frost, replace rotted sections to match, and tell you honestly when replacing beats patching.
  • Vinyl fences for owners who never want to stain, and dog kennels for dogs that need a run of their own.
  • Gates for walk-throughs and farm access, hung on posts set deep enough to stay square.

Village rules and line fences

Asphodel-Norwood's fence brochure allows fences up to 2.0 m in rear and side yards. Front yards are limited to 1.0 m for a solid fence, or 1.2 m for an open one like chain link or spaced pickets. You don't need a permit for a fence, and minor variances are possible if you need something different. Pool enclosures must be at least 1.2 m with self-closing gates.

For farm and boundary lines, talk to your neighbour before work starts and know where the property line is. We quote the line in writing, so you can both see the cost before anyone commits.

How a job runs

  1. Free on-site estimate. We usually get out within a few days, and village lots are often same-week. Farm runs need a walk of the whole line so we can price the bracing and access properly.
  2. Written quote. Material and labour per foot, bracing, gates and any tear-out, all on paper.
  3. Install. Posts go below frost in concrete. Most residential privacy runs take 1 to 3 days once materials are on site. Longer farm lines are scheduled in phases.

Fence questions in Norwood.

Yes. Long runs, paddocks and acreage perimeters sit alongside our privacy and chain link work, and we brace the corners for open-field wind.

That's about half of our rural call-outs. We reset heaved posts below frost, replace rotted sections to match, and tell you honestly when replacing beats patching.

Yes. Where an auger hits Shield rock, common around Lakefield and Havelock, we pin or core-set the post with proper anchoring rather than shallow dirt. It costs a bit more per hole, but the fence doesn't move.

Yes. The panels can rack to follow the grade, or be stepped for a formal look. We plan the method for each run so pets stay in and the top line still looks straight.

Most residential privacy runs take 1 to 3 days once the materials are on site. A pool fence is usually a 1 to 2 day install. Longer farm or riverfront jobs are scheduled in phases.

Each town sets its own by-law. It's at least 1.2 m (4 ft) in Peterborough, Kawartha Lakes, Selwyn and Asphodel-Norwood, and 1.83 m (6 ft) in Cobourg, with self-closing, self-latching gates. We confirm the current by-law for your address before quoting.

It varies by town. Nearby, Cobourg allows up to 1.8 m near rear and side lot lines, Selwyn 1.8 m, Asphodel-Norwood 2.0 m and Kawartha Lakes up to 2 m in most residential areas. For a Peterborough address, we confirm the city's current rules at the free estimate.

No, the City of Peterborough doesn't require a permit for a fence, except a pool or hot tub enclosure, which does need one. Height and sight-line rules still apply, so we check the current by-law for your address at the estimate.

Often. Heaved posts can be reset below the frost line in fresh concrete. If several moved at once, the original install was probably too shallow, which is worth fixing once and properly.

Good vinyl is made for cold and flexes rather than shatters. The bigger winter risk is a cheap install, where posts heave because they weren't set below the frost line. That's an installation problem, not a vinyl problem.

Below the frost line, which is typically around 4 ft in the Peterborough area, and deeper in exposed or wet ground. It's the biggest difference between a fence that lasts 20 years and one that leans after two winters.
