Pool Fence and Enclosure Installation in Peterborough
Pool fences and enclosures built to Ontario municipal pool enclosure bylaws, in iron, vinyl, glass or chain link. Self-closing, self-latching gates.
- Price
- Per foot, in writing after a free visit
- Lifespan
- Depends on the material: iron, vinyl and chain link all last with very little upkeep
- Upkeep
- Very little. Check that gates still self-close and latch every time before opening day.
Around Peterborough a pool has to sit inside a compliant fence with self-closing, self-latching gates, and inspectors do check. We build enclosures that pass the first time and still look like part of the yard.
A pool fence is usually a 1 to 2 day install once the materials arrive.
What the rules usually ask for
Towns around Peterborough, Cobourg and the Kawarthas usually want:
- Height: at least 1.2 m (4 ft) in Peterborough, Kawartha Lakes, Selwyn and Asphodel-Norwood, and 1.83 m (6 ft) in Cobourg
- No climbing: no horizontal rails a child can climb, and no gaps a child can squeeze through
- Self-closing, self-latching gates: with the latch on the inside near the top, out of a child's reach
- Gates that close themselves: they swing shut and latch every time, without being lifted or pushed
- A continuous enclosure: where a house wall forms part of it, that section needs alarms or compliant doors, where those are allowed
Gap and mesh limits vary by town too, so we confirm the current by-law for your address before we quote. Miss one item and you have to rebook the inspection, and in May that can cost you weeks. Our guide to pool fence bylaws in Peterborough and Cobourg walks through each point.
Materials that work around a pool
| Material | Why people pick it |
|---|---|
| Ornamental iron | The classic pool fence. You keep the view, it resists climbing, and it's code-friendly. |
| Vinyl | Privacy around the pool, built to the spacing rules. |
| Glass | An open look around the water. |
| Chain link | The budget option. Passes when the mesh is small enough for your town's by-law and the gates comply. |
All of these can pass when they're built to code. Iron and vinyl are the most popular for looks. More on ornamental iron, vinyl and chain link.
Decks, rock and retaining walls
Decks, rock and retaining walls are common around pools here, especially on Lakefield and riverside lots. We build enclosures around all three, so the line is continuous and there's no gap at a step or a wall where a child could get through. Where an auger hits rock, we pin or core-set the post.
Every post goes below the frost line, about 4 ft around Peterborough. That matters more on a pool fence than anywhere else. A post that heaves even a little can stop a gate from self-latching, and a gate that doesn't latch is a failed inspection.
Gates
Two of the five things inspectors check are about the gate. We fit self-closing hinges and self-latching hardware and hang the gate on posts that won't move. See gates for more.
Cost
Pool enclosures are priced like ornamental iron or vinyl, plus the gate hardware. Rock, slope and retaining-wall transitions add to it. We price yours per foot, in writing, after a free on-site visit. Our fence cost guide explains what moves the price.

Do you need a pool enclosure?
A pool enclosure is a good fit if you have:
- A new pool that needs an inspection
- An old fence that would fail one
- A pool built around decks or rock
Think twice if:
- You only need an ordinary yard fence. It will cost less. Look at wood or chain link.

Questions we get about installs.
Yes. Where an auger hits Shield rock, common around Lakefield and Havelock, we pin or core-set the post with proper anchoring rather than shallow dirt. It costs a bit more per hole, but the fence doesn't move.
Yes. The panels can rack to follow the grade, or be stepped for a formal look. We plan the method for each run so pets stay in and the top line still looks straight.
Most residential privacy runs take 1 to 3 days once the materials are on site. A pool fence is usually a 1 to 2 day install. Longer farm or riverfront jobs are scheduled in phases.
