Dogs need somewhere to burn off energy that isn't your flower bed. We supply and install portable kennels and permanent runs that actually keep them in, across Peterborough and the Kawarthas.
The best dog enclosure is one your dog can't dig under, climb over or chew through. Everything below comes back to those three things.
Portable kennel or permanent run
| Portable kennel | Permanent run | |
|---|---|---|
| Moves with you | Yes, or shifts around the yard with the seasons | No |
| Built with | Portable kennel units, anchored properly | Chain link with a buried edge, or welded panels |
| Footings | Anchored so it never tips or walks | Posts set in concrete |
| Price | Sized and quoted on site | Priced per foot, like chain link |
| Suits | Renters, seasonal yards, anyone who may move it | Diggers, big dogs, acreage |
Both are fitted with latches and hardware a dog can't chew through.
Sizing it right
Bigger than most people expect. As a rule of thumb, plan on at least 10 ft of running length for a medium dog, and more for large breeds. We size the run at the estimate, for one dog or several.
Height matters too:
- 4 ft holds most small and medium dogs
- 5 to 6 ft for jumpers, huskies and large breeds
- Climbers need a smooth face with no horizontal footholds
Stopping diggers, jumpers and chewers
- Diggers: a buried chain link edge or a ground apron, plus posts deep enough that the dog can't nose the fence up at the corners.
- Jumpers: go taller, and keep the top rails tight.
- Chewers: latches and hardware they can't get their teeth into.
Shade and windbreak add-ons are available too.
Built for frost and rock
A dog run takes a beating, and so does the ground under it. Around Peterborough we set permanent posts in concrete below the frost line, about 4 ft, so the run stays put through freeze-thaw. Portable units are anchored properly, so nothing tips and nothing gets dug out at the corners.
On rural lots around Havelock, bedrock sits close to the surface. We pin or concrete the posts into the rock instead of hoping shallow dirt will hold. Dog runs, gate fixes and single runs out there are all worth the trip.
Is a whole-yard fence better?
Sometimes. If you need the whole yard contained, a privacy fence or chain link covers more ground. Chain link is the everyday choice for dogs: affordable, see-through, and most dogs are happy with a view. Dogs that react to everything going by often settle down behind solid wood boards instead. Our guide to chain link vs wood for dogs compares them, and see chain link fences and privacy fences.

Kennel, run or full fence?
A kennel or run is a good fit if:
- Your dog digs, jumps or chews
- You're on acreage or a rural property
- You may want to move it later
Think twice if:
- You need the whole yard contained. A privacy fence or chain link covers more ground.

Questions we get about installs.
Yes. Where an auger hits Shield rock, common around Lakefield and Havelock, we pin or core-set the post with proper anchoring rather than shallow dirt. It costs a bit more per hole, but the fence doesn't move.
Yes. The panels can rack to follow the grade, or be stepped for a formal look. We plan the method for each run so pets stay in and the top line still looks straight.
Most residential privacy runs take 1 to 3 days once the materials are on site. A pool fence is usually a 1 to 2 day install. Longer farm or riverfront jobs are scheduled in phases.
